Western acupuncture uses meridian points based on scientific reasoning with consideration to anatomy and neurophysiology. Practitioners that provide western acupuncture do not use any Traditional Chinese mode of assessment and diagnosis to treat their patients. Instead, practitioners aim to promote healing through stimulation of the nervous system at the local level, spinal cord and brain stem level. Hence, Physiotherapists often provide other forms of treatment- manual therapy, home exercise program in conjunction with acupuncture. It is an ancient, safe, and effective alternative to medication and, in some cases, surgery.
Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins – the body’s natural pain-relieving neurohormones (endorphins) – through the insertion of single use, fine gauge sterile needles into specific anatomical points (acupuncture points) to encourage natural healing. Acupuncture affects the functioning of the nervous system, promotes a decrease in inflammation, increased circulation, and relief from pain.
